We put the Kilpi BareHigh model to a thorough test on an 11-kilometer hike in the Slovak mountains, where it faced a variety of conditions. Right at the start of the hike, we encountered dewy grass, which posed the first—and toughest—test of water resistance. We were pleasantly surprised that the shoes remained waterproof even after extended time in wet terrain. This performance reflects the high-quality craftsmanship and durable materials that Kilpi chose for this model.
In terms of grip and stability, the shoes proved reliable. In rugged mountain terrain with varied surfaces like rocks, mud, and damp soil, they provided a secure step. Stability and traction on slippery slopes significantly reduced the risk of slipping, enhancing both safety and comfort in challenging terrain. Even after several hours of wear, our feet remained comfortable, with no blisters or unpleasant pressure.
The inner lining with light insulation contributed to overall comfort across different temperatures throughout the day. In the morning, when it was still cold, it provided pleasant warmth, while later in the day, as temperatures rose, it remained breathable enough to keep feet comfortable without excessive heat.
The sole was initially somewhat stiff, but this changed gradually. After a few kilometers, it adapted to each step and softened, allowing better ground contact and natural foot movement. This feature is a significant advantage for longer hikes, where it's essential that the shoe doesn’t restrict foot flexibility while still offering necessary protection and support.
Our verdict: the Kilpi BareHigh model provides an excellent combination of water resistance, stability, and comfort. Thanks to these qualities, it’s an ideal choice for hiking in diverse conditions and is suitable for anyone looking for reliable barefoot footwear for active outdoor adventures.
